Former Afghanistan head coach Phil Simmons had called Rahmat Shah their most technically correct batter. Another Afghanistan head coach, Jonathan Trott, praised Rahmat's ability to soak up pressure but still keep scoring at a good tempo.
In a country that's brimming with T20 talents, Rahmat stands out as a technically sound batter who can put in the grind. This has been reflected in him being Afghanistan's leading run-getter in Tests and ODIs.
A patient batter, solid in defence and elegant with his drives, Rahmat made his ODI debut as a 19-year-old in 2013. It took him seven innings across three years to notch his maiden international century, an unbeaten 100 against Scotland. He picked up a five-wicket haul with his legbreaks in that period.
While his bowling became more sporadic, Rahmat was one of the mainstays for his batting abilities in the 50-over format, despite not breaking into the T20 side.
In 2018, he played Afghanistan's first-ever Test against India, and the next year, he helped them register their first win in the format with half-centuries in both innings against Ireland.
While he missed out by just two runs against Ireland, Rahmat became Afghanistan's first Test centurion in an away win over Bangladesh later that year.
In the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rahmat scored consecutive half-centuries in wins over Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Netherlands as Afghanistan almost snuck into the semi-finals.
The next year, he made his T20I debut against India, which remains his only appearance in the format for Afghanistan.
