On his Test debut in 2021, Kyle Mayers scaled the impossible. Batting in Chattogram against Bangladesh after several first-choice players opted out of the Covid pandemic-affected tour, he scored an extraordinary 210 in the fourth innings, steering West Indies to a successful chase of 395. His innings - most of which was compiled in the company of fellow debutant Nkrumah Bonner during a 216-run fourth-wicket partnership - remains one of the most remarkable rookie acts in the history of the game.
Mayer made his international debut in 2020 on the back of some impressive form in regional cricket for Barbados, scoring 113 from the middle order against Leeward Islands in the Regional Super50 before finishing second in the four-day run-scoring charts as Barbados cantered to the title. He demonstrated his power against seamers in the 2020 CPL for Barbados Tridents, which earned him a spot in the T20I side later in the year.
Before his Chattogram heroics, Mayers was rated as a left-hand batter who can bowl useful medium pace in a holding role. But he showed he is capable of doing more with the ball when he took a Test five-for against England in Grenada in 2022.
Later that year, he scored two ODI centuries as an opener, against Netherlands and New Zealand, but his returns became inconsistent thereafter.
Though he remains on the fringes of the T20I team, it has been more than two years since he last played either a Test or an ODI for West Indies. He has instead plied his trade in franchise cricket, finding success as an allrounder in the BPL, ILT20, MLC and CPL, scoring 46 twice in back-to-back BPL final victories for Fortune Barishal.
