Long seen as one for the future, 6'7" fast-bowling allrounder Jason Holder was appointed West Indies' ODI captain in 2014, when he was 23 and still making his way as a player. He soon took charge of the Test team too.
Barbados-born Holder played one first-class game before being called up for the 2010 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, where he was his team's leading bowler, with 12 wickets. He made his international debut in Australia early in 2013, and his first Test came against New Zealand in Bridgetown in June 2014, where he took two wickets and made a fighting 52 at No. 7.
Early in his captaincy there were questions over Holder's ability to lead a team of older, more experienced, cricketers, but his first Test century, against England in April 2015, underlined his credentials. West Indies were 189 for 6 when he came in to bat, and his three-and-a-half-hour innings saved the match for his team. In the series against Australia that followed, he top-scored for West Indies in the Test in Kingston, and kept things tight with the ball. In 2017, in the epic Test win at Headingley that was inspired by Shai Hope's twin centuries, Holder contributed with three wickets, and 43 runs in the first innings. His finest moment as captain came against England again, two years on, when he made a career-best 202 on his home ground, helping his team to a rare big Test win against a top side. Following that series, Holder was for a while the No. 1 allrounder in the ICC's rankings.
He also captained West Indies in the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups, though their results were poor, and he was part of the squad that won the 2016 World T20 under Daren Sammy, though he didn't play a game.
Holder turned out for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL in 2016, before going back to his first franchise, Sunrisers Hyderabad for two seasons at the turn of the decade, in which he took 30 wickets across 15 games. In 2022, he played through the season for Lucknow Super Giants, who made it to the knockouts in their first year in the competition. Closer home, Holder won the CPL with Barbados Tridents in 2014 and 2019 - the latter as captain.
Holder was at the forefront of the return of international cricket during the Covid pandemic, taking West Indies to England in the summer of 2020, and then to Bangladesh - for which he won the 2021 ICC Spirit of Cricket Award.
