Right-hand batter and left-arm fast-medium bowler JJ Smit made his senior debut for Namibia in 2019 and quickly established himself with a blend of attacking batting and incisive seam bowling.
In 2022 he turned in a stunning performance in an T20I against Uganda, making 71 off 35 balls from No. 7 before taking 6 for 10 and two catches. Six years into his T20I career, he was his country's second-most prolific bowler and batter. He particularly excelled in his second series in the format, making 190 runs and taking 16 wickets in his nine games in the T20 World Cup Qualifier in 2019-20, from where Namibia made it through to the main event.
In ODIs he went past 1000 runs in just under 50 matches, and hit the 50-wicket mark shortly after, averaging just over 21 with the ball.
In 2025, Smit got Namibia's T20 World Cup qualification campaign off to a flier with an unbeaten 111 at nearly close to three runs a ball to steal the game from Kenya after they had Namibia down at 68 for 4. Smit's team topped the table in that tournament, the T20 World Cup Africa Region final, and went to the 2026 World Cup. That performance came the month after Smit took seven wickets in three ODIs against Canada and Scotland in King City.
