Wasim Jaffer Accuses Agarkar-Led Panel of Mishandling Leading to Virat Kohli's Test Exit

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has launched a scathing attack on Ajit Agarkar's selection committee, holding them responsible for Virat Kohli's unexpected retirement from Test cricket. Jaffer's strong remarks suggest that 'bad treatment' from the selectors prompted the batting superstar to prematurely end his red-ball career, despite being capable of playing many more matches.

Kohli, alongside fellow batting stalwart Rohit Sharma, announced their retirements from Test cricket within a week of each other last year, just ahead of a crucial five-Test series against England. This double blow sent shockwaves through the Indian cricketing fraternity and left many questioning the circumstances.

Jaffer Cites 'Bad Behaviour' from Selectors

Speaking on the matter, Jaffer asserted that the selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, treated Kohli in a manner that caused him significant displeasure. "It felt like Virat was a bit unhappy with the way he was treated," Jaffer stated, hinting at underlying issues between the star player and the committee.

Jaffer emphasized Kohli's immense value to the game, both for his on-field prowess and his unparalleled popularity. "A player like Virat brings crowds to the stadium and has a massive following. He certainly could have played more Test cricket," Jaffer added, lamenting what he perceives as a premature end to a magnificent career.

Shastri's Previous Comments Resurface

Jaffer's comments echo sentiments previously expressed by former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri. Following Kohli's retirement, Shastri had suggested that the continuous public scrutiny and commentary had mentally exhausted the player, contributing to his decision to step away from the longest format of the game.

Kohli Misses Out on Historic Milestones

The timing of Kohli's retirement meant he narrowly missed out on several significant Test milestones, highlighting the impact of his decision. He was just two matches shy of completing 125 Test appearances, a feat that would have placed him alongside the legendary Sunil Gavaskar in terms of matches played.

Furthermore, Kohli needed just 770 more runs to reach the prestigious 10,000-run mark in Test cricket. Achieving this would have made him only the fourth Indian player to do so, joining an elite club comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.

Last Test Series Performance

Virat Kohli's final Test series for India came during the tour of Australia in early 2025. In that five-match series, he scored 190 runs at an average of 23.75, a performance that, while not his career best, did not overtly suggest an immediate end to his Test career was imminent based purely on form.
