May and June turned out to be totally disastrous for Zimbabwe's men's cricket team last year(2022). They lost 3-2 to associates Namibia in a 5-match T20I series at home. This series almost ended the hopes of Zimbabwe to directly qualify for WT20 2024 via T20I ranking (by finishing in top 11 before cutoff date). Now, they had/have to outperform other African teams in regional qualifier to book a place in the main event. After the horrible outing against Namibia, they had three ODIs and T20Is each against Afghanistan. While they would have expected it to be a competitive series, the reality was quite opposite. Zimbabwe cricket hit rock bottom losing all six of these matches, most with fine margins, that too at home. Zimbabwe were ranked 15th in ODIs, below Scotland, UAE and Netherlands.

Come July, they had a massive challenge ahead in the global qualifier (of WT20 later that year in Australia). Although they started the tournament as favourites among lesser fancied teams, it wasn't guaranteed that there wouldn't be any upset. Zimbabwe, grouped together with USA, Singapore and Jersey, finished the group stage at the top, won the semifinal vs PNG and qualified for the WT20 eventually. It ended their (near to) six years ICC-event participation drought. Sikandar Raza was the star of the show.

The next task was to beat more fancied Bangladeshi side. Bangladesh started as favourites but had to suffer a 1-2 loss in both ODI and T20I series. Sikandar Raza was again the star of the show. The redemption had just started for Zimbabwe who were done and dusted just a couple of months ago. The next home series was a mega challenge as they would face powerhouse India in ODIs. Although lost all the matches, it was a good exposure for Zimbabwe. They were on brink of a famous upset but couldn't cross the line in the 3rd ODI.

Australia in away conditions was the next assignment, which was tougher than the previous ones. Zimbabwe were competitive, again. Luckily, this time they registered a famous upset in the 3rd ODI of the series. Australian batters were bamboozled by the Cheveron bowlers.

Desperate to leave an impact on a global ICC event, Zimbabwe were eyeing to go through the main round of the T20 tournament in Australia. Being group together with West Indies, Ireland and Scotland in the preliminary round, the route was hard. Even after a loss against WI, they still managed to go through and lock horns with cricketing superpowers: India and Pakistan. Perhaps the biggest win of the entire redemption journey would be against Pakistan, where Zimbabwe found a way to squeeze Pakistani batters out in a thrilling win. The later journey in the main round wasn't fruitful. But, they kept themselves in contention for the semis till the last game, which was massive for Zimbabwe. Sikandar Raza was, again, the architect of the brilliance shown by Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe, who were seen as a fading side, came out of mediocre performances and took their game to a next level. They were feared thereafter. They were seen as a team to fear against. This glory was followed by a home series against Ireland, which ended on draw. The next series against Netherlands was very competitive but Zimbabwe took the honours. Zimbabwe's latest opposition were Pakistan 'A' team. The Cheverons displayed their dominance in the 50-over series with a 4-2 victory.

Zimbabwe are currently ranked 11th in both ODIs and T20Is. It's a remarkable turnaround for them in ODIs after they were ranked below three associate teams just a year ago. Now, they are ranked comfortably ahead of any associate teams and start the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier as favorites, which starts from June 18. Being hosts, they would fancy their chances to qualify for the World Cup after 8 years.
