Injury Nightmare Continues: Hardik Pandya Ruled Out of New Zealand Tour
Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has suffered yet another injury setback, forcing him out of the upcoming T20I and ODI series against New Zealand. The dynamic cricketer, who has been battling persistent fitness issues, sustained an injury to the anterior bone of his right foot, casting further doubt on his consistent return to international cricket.
The latest blow means Pandya will be sidelined for a minimum of three weeks, starting with two weeks of complete rest. This unfortunate development leaves a significant void in the Indian squad ahead of the New Zealand series, which is set to commence on October 22nd.
A Familiar Setback
Sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the injury following recent scans, which revealed the damage to his right foot. Pandya had initially reported sharp pain around his knee during a fielding drill just before the Afghanistan T20I series. Despite a brief period of rest, the pain resurfaced while he was preparing to obtain a fitness certificate, prompting further medical evaluation that confirmed the new injury.
The all-rounder's ‘Return to Play’ target had been set for September 20th. Based on this, he was also slated to feature for the India-A team in the ODI series against Australia-A, beginning on October 6th. This fresh injury has now ruled him out of that crucial preparatory series as well, further delaying his much-anticipated comeback.
Medical Assessment and Rehabilitation
The BCCI's medical panel is closely monitoring Pandya's situation. Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, Head of the BCCI Medical Panel, is currently in Japan and will assess Pandya's reports upon his return. A decision regarding the commencement of his rehabilitation program will be made after a thorough evaluation of his condition.
Initially, the BCCI had even begun visa processing to include Pandya with the Indian contingent traveling to Japan for the Asian Games, highlighting the board's keenness for his swift return. However, these plans have now been unequivocally shelved.
A Troubling Pattern
This marks the third significant injury setback for the 29-year-old since the Indian Premier League (IPL). Having been training at the National Cricket Academy's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru post-IPL, Pandya's journey has been plagued by recurring fitness concerns. Previous injuries impacted his availability for the Afghanistan ODI series and the England T20 series, consistently disrupting his carefully planned return timelines.
The repeated nature of these injuries has become a growing concern for both the player and the national selectors, raising questions about his long-term durability and ability to maintain peak fitness for demanding international schedules.
Eyes on Future Return
With the New Zealand series now off the cards, Hardik Pandya's next potential return target is the ODI series against Zimbabwe. Should he fail to achieve full fitness by then, he may look to prove his match readiness through domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy or the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
