Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have completed a major overhaul of their coaching staff following the appointment of former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan as head coach. The franchise ended its 18-year association with Stephen Fleming after missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons.

CSK announced a major restructuring of their coaching and support staff on October 27, marking a new phase for the five-time IPL champions as they look to rebuild following several disappointing seasons.

The changes include the departures of batting coach Michael Hussey, bowling coach Eric Simons, assistant coach Rajiv Kumar, physiotherapist Tommy Simsek, and strength and conditioning coach Greg King. Hussey and Simons had both been associated with the franchise's coaching setup since 2018, while Simsek had been with CSK since its inaugural season in 2008.

As for the new arrivals, former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel and former England spinner Gareth Batty have joined as assistant coaches, while former Indian pacer Mohit Sharma has been appointed bowling coach.

Mohit returns to the franchise where he previously played and won the IPL Purple Cap in 2014 after taking 23 wickets. Batty, meanwhile, joins CSK following an impressive coaching spell in which he guided Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024.

No Dedicated Batting Coach for IPL 2027, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan Confirms

One of the notable decisions under the new coaching setup is the decision not to appoint a dedicated batting coach for the upcoming season. According to a report by Rediff, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that the announced coaching group would form the team's backroom staff without a separate batting coach.

The role was previously held by Michael Hussey, who had served as batting coach since 2018. His departure follows the end of Stephen Fleming's tenure as head coach.

Meanwhile, the management is “reportedly” considering utilizing Gareth Batty as a batting mentor.

CSK's Response to Three Disappointing Seasons

CSK's recent performances have prompted the management to overhaul its coaching department, with fans also calling for changes following the team's disappointing results.

The franchise finished eighth in the 2026 season, tenth in 2025, and fifth in 2024, missing the playoffs in all three campaigns.

However, coaching changes alone may not resolve the team's difficulties. Squad balance, recruitment, player availability, tactical decisions, and the development of younger players will also influence whether CSK can return to sustained competitiveness.

A New Chapter Ahead of IPL 2027

The revamped coaching staff, led by head coach Zaheer Khan, will prepare for the next IPL season as the franchise looks to establish a new working structure while maintaining the consistency and team culture associated with its earlier success.

The decision to part ways with several experienced staff members represents a substantial change for a franchise traditionally associated with continuity, trust in its players and coaching staff, and backing its personnel through difficult seasons.

Whether these changes translate into improved performances will become clearer when CSK return to the field in IPL 2027 .
